Rare first Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer All Technicolor edition of Baum's most famous Oz book, the basis for one of the greatest films in cinema history.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest films in cinema history and based on L. Frank Baum's bestselling classic, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's 1939 American musical fantasy film The Wizard of Oz was one of the earliest films to use Technicolor and was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture. According to the Library of Congress, it is the most seen film in movie history. The endpapers feature stills from the movie and it is also illustrated profusely throughout in colour and black and white by W.H. Denslow.
Description and Condition:
First Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer All Technicolor edition, first printing with the gilt titles to the spine and printer's imprint to the copyright page (Bienvenue & Schmidt, pg 13). Original publishers green cloth with gilt titles and black labels to the spine, pictorial endpapers featuring black and white stills from the film. Illustrated with 8 tipped in colour plates and numerous doutone plates and in-text illustrations by W. W. Denslow. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good + condition. There is minor loss in parts to the spine and part of the front flap but the colours are still vibrant and it presents excellently.
