The Two Magics | 1898, first edition in book form of the classic 'The Turn of the Screw’.

£2,000.00 GBP

A ghost story or psychological character study - which one is more horrifying? The Turn of the Screw is a masterpiece of horror.

The first edition in book form of Henry James' brilliant The Turn of The Screw, the darkest and indeed richest ghost story I have ever read

Published in The Two Magics, there were only 1500 examples printed in 1898 and in this condition it is genuinely rare. Many consider this to the be the most terrifying ghost story ever written

Provenance: Bookplate of Robert, Earl of Crewe, a British Liberal politician, statesman and writer.

First edition, first impression, title printed in red and black, 32pp, advertisements at rear, light browning to endpapers, small armorial bookplate of Robert, Earl of Crewe, internally near-fine, with the pages remarkably fresh, original issue blue cloth with four irises in blind to upper cover, lettered in gilt, light discolouration to spine, slight bumping to spine tips and corners, extremities a little rubbed, an excellent example.

Published by William Heinemann, London, 1898.
