The Hunchback of Notre Dame | 1923, first photoplay edition, illustrated with stills from the Lon Chaney film.

£300.00 GBP £400.00

An excellent rare first photoplay edition of Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame from 1923, inserted with stills from the 1923 Universal film of the same name directed by Wallace Worsley starring Lon Chaney as Quasimodo, the hunchback, Ernest Torrence, Patsy Ruth Miller, and others. Hugo's iconic work (and one of his most sought after for book collectors) is classic of literature and casts the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the iconic symbol of Paris, as a character in its own right. Interestingly, a comprehensive replica of the cathedral was built for the film and is featured in one of the stills in this book.

Description and Condition:

First photoplay edition, first printing. Original publishers brown cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. The binding is a fine example with no defects. Internally the book is incredibly fresh and some minor staining to the title page is near fine to fine. The stills from the movie, illustrating the text, are fine. The original unrestored dustjacket has a few small nicks but is vibrant with the colours brighter than usually encountered and presents as an excellent example.
