An original pastel on paper of Edgar Allen Poe. The artist Ian Hughes has taken his cue from the most famous image we have of Poe, one of the few we have to go off as there are remarkably few from his lifetime.

To the observer, with his cryptic look etched on his face, this is unmistakably Poe. A man whose life remains shrouded in mystery, with conflicting accounts about poverty, alcoholism, drug use, and the circumstances of his death in 1849. Like his life, Poe's poems and short stories are infused with a sense of tragedy and mystery. Among his best-known works are: The Raven, Annabel Lee, and The Fall of the House of Usher. 

This work has recently been framed and glazed to the highest gallery standard.

Ian Hughes (1958 - 2014) was a well known Scottish painter who specialised in portraits.
