A truly stunning example, easily the best I have seen of the first illustrated edition of Jane Austen's Emma.

Published in 1898, this is the second in George Allen's decorated cloth Austen series, intended to follow its phenomenally successful predecessor the 'Peacock edition' of Pride and Prejudice. Both are some of the most sought after Austen editions due to their beauty and both are now increasingly hard to find in excellent condition.

The novel "Emma" was first published in 1815, it is a novel that centres around a young woman, Emma Woodhouse, who is described as "handsome, clever, and rich" but also as someone who is "slightly spoilt" and "inclined to think too well of herself." Emma's story is one of self-discovery and personal growth as she navigates through the complexities of love, relationships and society.

The George Allen edition of Emma, illustrated by Chris Hammond, is considered a beautiful and valuable addition to any collector of Jane Austen's works, or anyone who is a fan of classic literature and illustration.

First edition thus; first Hammond edition, only impression. Original decorative gilt, blue cloth binding. Binding is excellent with minor almost imperceptible wear. Internally near-fine with minor foxing here and there. A stunning example.
