CHARLES BAUDELAIRE | 1996, original artwork, pastel on paper, signed, dated and titled, framed and glazed.

£500.00 GBP £800.00

Original, 1996 pastel-on-paper by Scottish artist Ian Hughes of Charles Baudelaire.

Etienne Carjat's 1858 photograph of the French poet is the basis for Hughes' interpretation, defined by a severe mouth, immoderate brow, and two drops of coffee-like eyes. Carjat, a renowned caricaturist, is remembered for his striking portraits of the political and artistic figures in 1860 Paris. This piece has been framed and glazed to gallery standards.

Hughes (1958 - 2014) was a well known Scottish painter who specialised in portraits.

"Throughout his career Ian Hughes has bravely tackled the difficult issue of mental instability in a most impressive way both in his pictures and as a psychiatric nurse, never deviating from his cause; never painting for the market place; never sensationalising his subject."
